The Word tithe is defined by Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary as to pay or give a tenth part of, especially for the support of the church. The practice of tithing predates the Law of Moses. It is noted in the Scripture that Patriarchs Abraham and Jacob paid tithes.
The Bible contains considerable insight and instruction concerning the paying of the tithe. This article will deal primarily with those found in just one chapter of God's Word: namely, Deuteronomy 26. I will share the insights and instructions with you in a succinct form.
Tithing is called "the sacred portion." (Verse 13)
Tithing was to be placed in a basket. (Verse 2) Note: Is not this in the forerunner of the contemporary offering plate?
Tithing was to be taken "to the priest who is in office at that time." (Verse 3&4)
When paying tithes, the tither is to remind oneself before the Lord of just where he or she was when the Lord found them. (Verses 5 - 7)
The tither is also to remind oneself of all that God has done for him or her. (Verse 8 & 9)
The tither is to acknowledge to God that he or she is giving back to God some of what the Lord first gave to them. (Verse 10)
When the tither presents ones tithe to the Lord, they are instructed to accompany the tithe with worship. (Verse 10)
The tither and the priest are commanded then to "rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given you and your household." (Verse 11)
When the tither is finished paying tithes, he or she is then instructed to pray this prayer, "...I have listened to the voice of the Lord my God; I have done according to all that thou hast commanded me." (Verse 14)
Finally, the tither is encouraged then to pray a prayer of petition for God's Blessing. (Verse 15)
Tithing carries such profound promises of blessing from God to the tither. It also inherently packs heavy promises of blight to the one who robs God.It is inconceivable that someone would try to do an end run around God on this commandment. May I remind you that God is just too big for any of us to get around Him or His Word.
